Ponytails: An Easy Switch in Minutes!

Picture of a sleek pony tail

If you have long hair, and you are in a hurry, what do you do with your hair? You put it up in a Ponytail!!Ponytails are  comfortable and is one of the easiest things to style. But they don’t have to be plain Jane . If you have medium or long hair, it is  easy to  spice things up to keep your ponytail from being boring.

We’ve compiled a list of easy styles you can try when you just want something simple:

If you want a more elegant pony tail for an evening out, curl you hair first, then don’t pull your hair back too tightly, leave a bit of room in the front, put the band around the back part of your hair, and push the front part forward just a little.

For something a bit different, try wearing your pony tail with a head band. Make a rough ponytail with your locks covering the side of your forehead. Just add a hair band without taking the strands of hair aside. If you use a hair band with jewels or crystals that will add another layer of glamour for the evening look.

A good one to do with straight hair is the beehive. This is a popular nighttime hairstyle, but it takes a little more time. Simply make a beehive in the front, then use hair clips to keep it in place. Again, you can leave a ponytail in the back or move it to the side.

If you’re out of hairstyle ideas in the morning, adding a simple ponytail in the morning can give your head a fresh new look!

For those of you looking for a sleek evening look, and you don’t quite have the pony tail knack, come on in, I can help you!!

What is Keratin Hair Treatment?

What is Keratin Hair Treatment?

Simply put, is the latest trend for straightening and smoothing your curly hair. When professionally applied at a salon, the Keratin treatment is a safe and effective way of giving you soft, silky, straight hair that many curly haired  people dream of having.

So what exactly is in Keratin treatment? Keratin is a natural protein found in the hair, nails and skin of every living creature. Some people have more natural Keratin in their hair than others. Even with that, curly or dry hair can become frizzyand hard to manage. Hence, the Keratin treatments.

Applied in a salon setting, the Keratin product is infused into the hair follicles then sealed with a flat iron. Since it’s not a chemical it doesn’t frizz, dry or damage, as most straightening techniques are notorious for. It also gives your hair an external protective layer that smooths and repairs. Keratin is known to fix everything from kinky roots and straight ends to hat hair and bed head. It lasts for several weeks, and makes life a breeze for people with hard to manage hair!!

There are a host of brand names available, including Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy by Coppola, Global Keratin Complex, the La Brasiliana treatment, Brazilian Keratin Treatment, the Brazilian Blow Out, and Brazilian Hair. Although, home treatment is not advised. Try to find a salon that offers a Keratin treatment, because they’ve done it enough times and have the experience and equipment to give you perfect results.

Maria is an expert at Keratin Treatments, so if you have questions about whether one would be right for your hair, give her a call.

How Important is it for Your Hair to Look Good?

They say you only get one chance to make a good  first impression. And the time period within which you make that first impression is around 15 seconds. If your hair is straggly, dry and unkempt, do you think that will make a good first impression?

There have been numerous studies that  say, no, it won’t. While having a good haircut that lays well and styles easily may not guarantee you will get the job, having a bad haircut and dressing poorly WILL guarantee that you WONT get the job. Beyond the physical condition of your hair, anyone who has ever been to a oggd stylist can tell you, having a great haircut can make you feel like you can take on anything. It is relaxing and you feel gorgeous when you walk out that salon door!!

I found a great article on WebMD that talks about  the subject of a good hair cut and color, and what it means

http://www.webmd.com/healthy-beauty/hair-health-11/hair-statement to you

If your budget is tight, it never hurts to let your stylist know. Often, we feel ashamed when hard financial times hit us. They may be able to offer you a little bit of a break on their fees, or be more strategic with your hair cuts. Style your hair so as it grows out, it will still lay beautifully. Cut it a bit shorter  than you normally would. That way you won’t need to get your hair cut as often.

Instead of coloring your hair, get a weave of highlights. That way roots are not so noticeable as your hair grows.  Don’t just try to ignore a bad haircut and hope no one notices, because they will.

Huntington Beach – One of the Best Cities in the O.C & Loves Dogs

Rosanne SaxI just came across an  article in the Orange County Register.  about  the top places to live in Orange County and Huntington Beach came in second!! For me, personally, I LOVE the look and feel of Huntington Beach. I really connect with the people here, so  it is exciting to have the city where I spend so much of my time everyday named one of the Best Cities in the O.C. As a Master Hair Stylist, it feels good to be working in a city that has so much to offer it’s residents and to know that I contribute to the city with my work.

Just for your information, here is an excerpt from the article in the Register:

2. Huntington Beach has:

•  Eight miles of wide, sandy beaches – the longest continuous stretch of beachfront on the West Coast. and  Big-name resorts draw tourists along the coast.   There is a strong sense of community in Huntington Beach, a city founded in the late 1880s and incorporated in 1909. That community spirit is evident in the city’s wildly popular Fourth of July Parade. You also get that easygoing, beach-lifestyle feeling in Huntington.

Fan favorite: “This  city has a little bit of everything; great shopping and entertainment, relaxing recreation for your entire family (including your pets), and a nice variety of interesting places to eat. Add the wonderful ocean breeze and mild
temperature.” – Marie Cox, Brea

Fun fact: Some restaurants in this dog-friendly city offer menu items for canine guests.”

As a dog owner, the other thing that excites me is the dog friendly atmosphere in Huntington Beach!!  Most dogs LOVE the beach. They like to run, the love to jump into the surf and roll in the wet sand. In Huntington beach there is a group of people who well understand this and they have come together to form the The Preservation Society of Huntington Dog Beach, a 501(C)3 . Here is a quote from their website:

“Huntington Dog Beach is situated on Pacific Coast Highway between Seapoint Ave and 21st St in the beautiful city of Huntington Beach, CA. One mile of golden sands and the exciting Pacific Ocean have made Huntington Dog Beach a paradise for dogs where they can frolic in the water and taste a sense of freedom. ”   I have several friends who bring their dogs to this beach on a fairly regular basis. I also have other friends who take the well loved pets to the beach in other parts of California. My  friend In Northern California brings her Golden Retrievers to a beautiful beach in Carmel. You can see in the picture above this is something which her dogs just love.”

Curly Hair Extensions

Most of the time when we think hair extensions, we think of straight, soft, silky hair. But there is an alternative option when it comes to extensions. Many stars like Rihanna and Beyoncé change up their hair like they change up their socks. They go from short black Mohawks, to long and wavy red hair. Even if you have straight hair, we can use these curly hair extensions to give you a whole new look..

I need a good Haircut!!!

Elizabeth Banks, soft waves, shoulder length

If you need a good haircut, well, you have come to the right place. I nicknamed my business Hair by Maria. But truly, most of the time it is Hair by Maria and You!!  You tell me the look you want, I tell you if it will suit your face  and together we make something beautiful.

Sometimes the most difficult part of my profession as a Master Sylist and Colorist is to tell someone their face and hair are just not suited for a certain style.

Fine Hair is not going to lay the same way as thick hair. Thicker hair doesn’t always take to small, choppy layering as well as fine hair does. A round face will look better with some layers close to the face rather than all one length.

I do want to say that I am not someone who disregards my clients wishes and just does what I want to do. I am not talking about that. But if my people come to me and they want a style that will just not make them look beautiful, I have to work with them to find the flavor of the style they want, while giving them a cut that will let them leave my chair feeling happy and beautiful. They say that in life there must be some measure of compromise. I like to compromise. Not on the quality of my work, mind you, but on the style…

So for today, I will call my business Hair by Maria and You….

Hair Styles for the Beach

The summer days are coming to an end for the rest of the country, but here in Southern California, some of our best beach days are still to come. Because of the way weather works, during the summer, when the weather can get pretty hot inland, it will tend to stay cooler here at the beach. By September, as the inland temperatures cool down, we start getting the nice warm weather everyone else in the country associates with Summer. For us summer lasts until October.

Am I not right? I think that is why I get so annoyed when I go into the major department stores and all they have in stock is long sleeved tops and trousers. No more bathing suits, no cute short sleeved t-shirts.

Here at Hair by Maria, we know how the beach weather works, and we don’t put away our summer hairstyles in August. In fact, I don’t know that we ever put them away!!

Breaking the rules!!! That is something we all need to do once in a while!! Because some rules are MADE to be broken. In-Style Magazine has a write up  about 11 Rules you SHOULD break. The First rule that should be broken is rule number one : Women over 40 should NOT have long hair. Traditional wisdom from our parents generation said if you are over 40, your hair should be cut short to frame your face, and give it a lift. I say, that is just silly. You can wear your hair how you like. In-Style went on to say,  General rules are not appropriate, each person is unique. We have different shapes to our faces, different types of activities we like to do, one rule does not apply to all.

For many women over 50, long, straight, thick hair just hanging down around their face CAN age you. If you keep it layered around your eys and cheekbones, keep it in good condition and healthy looking, with some body and shape, there is NO reason why you can’t still have long hair when you are over 50!!.

They go on to talk about 10 other rules you can and should break. Check it out:

Why Does Your Hair Get Frizzy?

Beach Hair
After a day at the beach?

Hair gets Frizzy for several different reasons, and you can have just one of those issues with your hair, or all of them. I won’t get very technical here, but I will till you that humidity is the biggest cause of hair frizz. Some of your frizziness can be caused by over heated appliances.  The next biggest cause is poor nutrition, and last but not least is that thing we call stress. When you are under stress your body uses up nutrients more quickly, and if you do not eat properly, those nutrients are not getting put back into your system.

If you combine any of these you have a very strong chance of having frizzy hair. Many of my customers have hair that is neither curly, nor straight. It has waves. Curly  hair, as long as it is not frizzy as well, is fun, and full of whimsy. Look at these two pictures.
On the left, her hair looks dry and unmanageable, on the right, soft and pretty. You can straighten the look with one of several methods I use for my clients. It just depends upon the look you are in the mood for.

We are running a special this week on hair smoothing, offering 25% off of any type of hair smoothing you choose, from a Keratin treatment, to deep conditioning.

BUT if you just want your hair to be soft and look healthy, we don’t have to straighten it, we can just do another type of treatment for you…

Give me a call at 562.972.5006     and we can talk about what you want to do, and decide the best way to go.
Or you can text me at that same number, I will get back to you as soon as I can.
thank you

You can’t always judge a book by it’s cover, but you probably will. Now, I love music, all types of music, and I am of Latin descent, so music affects me to my very soul. It can change my mood from happy to sad, from peaceful and content to fired up. I think it’s all part of being a creative person!!

I saw a You Tube Video today of a Lady Gaga’s appearance  on a  radio show, where she performed live. While I am intrigued by her personal style, most of her popular music is not the type I usually enjoy listening to. But this video that was posted on You Tube showed just her, sitting at her piano, playing and singing. It was pure, and it touched me.  The same thing happened to me when I saw Beyonce sing to the President and First Lady. I knew she was talented, but once again, not someone I listened to regularly, yet when I heard her sing “At Last”, I could not believe my ears. She had power and range, way beyond anything I had heard in her popular music style.

So, you say to yourself, what the heck does this have to do with Hair, or skin care? EVERYTHING!!! Look, when an artist chooses a persona, that persona will endear them to some people, and will alienate others. The same thing goes for the rest of us mere mortals.

If your hair is dry and brittle, your skin is patchy or has blotches, people are going to be less likely to think favorably of you. YES people should be able to look beyond that and give you a chance. But I can guarantee you most  will not. Just Like I did with Lady Gaga, and Beyonce, they will judge you initially by what they see when you walk into their world for the first time.  When you leave you door, it is important to always look neat, clean and healthy.

Looking good not only helps other people see you differently, it will make YOU feel good about yourself.
