It’s true, lately a lot of hair experts have said that grease is actually good for your hair. But getting the right levels can be tricky. Too little might not do anything, and too much might mean acne and shiny foreheads. But just the right levels can mean a natural light hold, softer hair and healthier roots. Another thing some of us girls really need help with is locking in moisture. Grease doesn’t dissipate easily so it can guarantee a nice hold for your hair, and the moisture inside it. As stated earlier, it can also provide a light hold your difficult to manage hair. Plus it holds for hours without a hitch. Many don’t know, but it can also be used as a volumizer. Most of us only expect creams and gels to be able to give us lively curls, but next time try a little but of grease with a light twist up, you’ll be surprised. Though you always have to be careful with grease. The rule of thumb is, whatever you think is enough, but half of that back in the jar and use the other half. Grease is very concentrated and can make a mess very easily. It should also never be applied to the scalp since it can block pours and irritate the skin. But if you’re carefully and have an adventure spirit, it can be a useful tool in your arsenal against flat and unmanageable hair.
L’Oreal is developing a pill that people will be able to take to prevent their hair from turning grey. There are a couple of hitches, though. One, the pill is supposed to prevent hair from turning gray, but it will not turn hair back to it’s natural color from gray. Some of the scientisst who discussed this product were wondering how people could actually prove that it prevented gray hair.
As a hair stylist, I know what chemicals can do to the hair shaft is handled improperly. When someone has you ingest a chemical to keep the color in your hair. This made me curious to see what it was and how it was supposed to work.
I found this video and article that explain the process. It works using a chemical compound found in certain fruits, and no one yet knows the side effects that may result from taking the pill. Here is an excerpt from an article by Christina Caron
“Bruno Bernard, head of the Hair Care, Quality and Color team at L’Oreal, first spoke about the cosmetic company’s research, telling the Daily Mail the pill will be based on a fruit extract that mimics an enzyme called TRP-2, which isn’t present in hair follicles.
TRP-2 helps make pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. In theory, the presence of TRP-2 could prevent hair from going gray. “Ideally you would take [the pill] for your whole life, but realistically we’d encourage people to start using it before their hair goes grey because we don’t think it can reverse the process once it has started,” he told the UK paper. “We have a watertight proof of concept, and we think it will have a market among men as well as women.”
I don’t know if I could picture myself or my clients taking a pill every day to prevent their hair from turning gray.
What do you think? Here is the report, check it out..

The Hairlocs Hair Extension System is painless and the safest method for hair enhancement because it was originally designed for thin and fragile hair. They say you only get one chance to make a good first impression. And the time period within which you make that first impression is around 15 seconds. If your hair is straggly, dry and unkempt, do you think that will make a good first impression?
There have been numerous studies that say, no, it won’t. While having a good haircut that lays well and styles easily may not guarantee you will get the job, having a bad haircut and dressing poorly WILL guarantee that you WONT get the job. Beyond the physical condition of your hair, anyone who has ever been to a oggd stylist can tell you, having a great haircut can make you feel like you can take on anything. It is relaxing and you feel gorgeous when you walk out that salon door!!
I found a great article on WebMD that talks about the subject of a good hair cut and color, and what it means
If your budget is tight, it never hurts to let your stylist know. Often, we feel ashamed when hard financial times hit us. They may be able to offer you a little bit of a break on their fees, or be more strategic with your hair cuts. Style your hair so as it grows out, it will still lay beautifully. Cut it a bit shorter than you normally would. That way you won’t need to get your hair cut as often.
Instead of coloring your hair, get a weave of highlights. That way roots are not so noticeable as your hair grows. Don’t just try to ignore a bad haircut and hope no one notices, because they will.

I just came across an article in the Orange County Register. about the top places to live in Orange County and Huntington Beach came in second!! For me, personally, I LOVE the look and feel of Huntington Beach. I really connect with the people here, so it is exciting to have the city where I spend so much of my time everyday named one of the Best Cities in the O.C. As a Master Hair Stylist, it feels good to be working in a city that has so much to offer it’s residents and to know that I contribute to the city with my work.
Just for your information, here is an excerpt from the article in the Register:
2. Huntington Beach has:
• Eight miles of wide, sandy beaches – the longest continuous stretch of beachfront on the West Coast. and Big-name resorts draw tourists along the coast. There is a strong sense of community in Huntington Beach, a city founded in the late 1880s and incorporated in 1909. That community spirit is evident in the city’s wildly popular Fourth of July Parade. You also get that easygoing, beach-lifestyle feeling in Huntington.
Fan favorite: “This city has a little bit of everything; great shopping and entertainment, relaxing recreation for your entire family (including your pets), and a nice variety of interesting places to eat. Add the wonderful ocean breeze and mild
temperature.” – Marie Cox, Brea
Fun fact: Some restaurants in this dog-friendly city offer menu items for canine guests.”
As a dog owner, the other thing that excites me is the dog friendly atmosphere in Huntington Beach!! Most dogs LOVE the beach. They like to run, the love to jump into the surf and roll in the wet sand. In Huntington beach there is a group of people who well understand this and they have come together to form the The Preservation Society of Huntington Dog Beach, a 501(C)3 . Here is a quote from their website:
“Huntington Dog Beach is situated on Pacific Coast Highway between Seapoint Ave and 21st St in the beautiful city of Huntington Beach, CA. One mile of golden sands and the exciting Pacific Ocean have made Huntington Dog Beach a paradise for dogs where they can frolic in the water and taste a sense of freedom. ” I have several friends who bring their dogs to this beach on a fairly regular basis. I also have other friends who take the well loved pets to the beach in other parts of California. My friend In Northern California brings her Golden Retrievers to a beautiful beach in Carmel. You can see in the picture above this is something which her dogs just love.”
Most of the time when we think hair extensions, we think of straight, soft, silky hair. But there is an alternative option when it comes to extensions. Many stars like Rihanna and Beyoncé change up their hair like they change up their socks. They go from short black Mohawks, to long and wavy red hair. Even if you have straight hair, we can use these curly hair extensions to give you a whole new look..
We are now almost half way through September. Next month will bring Halloween, the month after is Thanksgiving, and then Christmas. Now is the time to start getting your body and health in shape for the upcoming months. They say it takes 21 days to make a new habit. Every year I have friends who make resolutions on New Years to get healthy, eat better and exercise more. Well how about starting now?
If you simply workout once in a while, make it a habit to go to the gym twice a week. Walk three times a week, fast, for a half and hour. Eat lighter, have less meat, and more veggies with your meals. Maybe even replace your lunch sandwich with a salad twice a week. You may not lose 10 pounds by simply doing these things, but you won’t gain weight either. And you will be ready to take on all those Christmas cookies and parties with a stronger will. They won’t just jump in your mouth and onto your hips without you even knowing.
If you need a good haircut, well, you have come to the right place. I nicknamed my business Hair by Maria. But truly, most of the time it is Hair by Maria and You!! You tell me the look you want, I tell you if it will suit your face and together we make something beautiful.
Sometimes the most difficult part of my profession as a Master Sylist and Colorist is to tell someone their face and hair are just not suited for a certain style.
Fine Hair is not going to lay the same way as thick hair. Thicker hair doesn’t always take to small, choppy layering as well as fine hair does. A round face will look better with some layers close to the face rather than all one length.
I do want to say that I am not someone who disregards my clients wishes and just does what I want to do. I am not talking about that. But if my people come to me and they want a style that will just not make them look beautiful, I have to work with them to find the flavor of the style they want, while giving them a cut that will let them leave my chair feeling happy and beautiful. They say that in life there must be some measure of compromise. I like to compromise. Not on the quality of my work, mind you, but on the style…
So for today, I will call my business Hair by Maria and You….
I have written several blogs about hair loss over the past three years. In these times of stress, I felt it was important to let people know what the effects it has on hair loss in many of us. It also affects our overall health. But stress is not the only factor in hair loss. Genetics and environment can also strongly affect hair loss and over all health.
How many of you have noticed you hair seems to grown faster and thicker in the summer. Well it is not just your imagination. I see it in my regular clients and in my children as well. There are studies that prove light has a significant affect on hair growth.
The Power of Light
Light is energy. Since the dawn of time, the sun has been the source of all life on earth. All forms of life, no matter how primitive or how advanced, derive sustenance from life-giving light.
Scientists have long known that light has an effect on cell function. Light has the power to heal, but the lack of light can also cause serious illness. Remove a plant from sunlight and it will wither and die. Place an infant born prematurely with jaundice under a simple blue light and the symptoms are reversed.
During the summer months when we are exposed to more hours of natural sunlight we find that our hair grows faster and thicker. It is the red spectrum of sunlight that stimulates the blood supply to our scalp and causes this biological phenomenon.
Discovery of Laser Therapy
While conducting research on mice in 1964, Dr. Andre Mester of Budapest Hungary, used a low reactive laser to heal wounds that would not respond to other treatment. Using the laser, he was able to hyper-stimulate skin cell growth in the effected area, thus healing the wounds. He noticed a surprising side effect – the laser also stimulated hair growth in the treated area where longer, thicker hair appeared. In subsequent testing, both results were duplicated involving diabetic patients with wounds that would not heal.
How Does It Work?
Unlike high powered lasers that use heat to cut through tissue, low level laser therapy uses red and near-infrared light on the cool end of the light spectrum. This “cool laser” is able to penetrate deep into tissues of the scalp, stimulating micro-circulation of blood supply, cell metabolism and protein synthesis through the process of photo bio-stimulation.
Laser Hair Therapy (LHT) is a new, non-surgical, scientific approach in the treatment of hair loss, thinning hair and scalp problems. LHT has been medically tested and is FDA approved for safety and effectiveness.
Hair restoration clinics around the world have been documenting the success of the Laser Hair Therapy as an important tool to stop the progression of hair loss and stimulate hair growth. Clinical studies have shown that many benefits of Laser Hair Therapy:
- Cessation of hair loss
- Increase in hair volume
- Stimulation of the hair follicle
- Promotion of thicker, stronger and healthier hair
- Strengthening and nourishing of weak hair
Laser hair therapy has proved to be a viable option for both men and women who are in the early stages of hair loss and general thinning.
